...Facing the Music

Much of life is happenstance but there are the odd synchronicity of moments which this Wombat finds quite delightful.

Recently working on a dance video and shooting some stills for it, my attention went to the faces of the dancers rather than the general class or movement shot.

There seemed to be in the dancer's concentration the essence of the theatrical or performing experience.

Facing the Music.

Although the "Music" we face in “Wombat Droppings” is of an entirely different and more nation altering order.

The synchronicity was an acquaintance contacting to alert me that there was to be a “get-together” of those who were either taught by or worked with the legendary Betty Pounder in theatre productions she choreographed for JC Williamson's theatres over many years.

On going to the FB site where the details were, I saw there were many images from a variety of productions and thought, well, I could probably add a few, too.

Some 260 images later I was a little surprised by the extent of my early productivity and very gratified by the responses of those seeing the images and who commented and seemed to appreciate the effort of scanning all these now quite vintage negs, prints and transparency’s.

As I replied to one comment, It‘s only when there is a filter of time in the works that you finally see them in the context of their own experience and see value.
It was interesting looking back to my beginnings of "facing the music" photographically and appreciating its visual development, too.

Wombat Droppings or Foetid News from Oz Politics.

Joe “Cereal–Toyota-Holden-SPC-Killer” Hockey is clamping down on debate by suing Fairfax Media over a story about his fundraising efforts on behalf of the NSW Liberal party. Having nothing to hide except free speech, Hockey doesn't want any public distraction whilst  going about perpetrating possibly the biggest defrauding of Oz politics when he hands down in conjunction with the Business Council of Australia’s and “The-Coots-With-Queer-Ideas-From-a-Parallel-Universe” (IPA), his single budget.
Unprecedented in the selective leaking, spin, lying, dissimulation, obfuscations and kite-flying over the past month this “Ugly American” mandated rabble (Liarbril Party) is about to fundamentally alter and cement into the national ethos for once and for all their conceptually dessicated idea of this country. The shambles they dishonestly but successfully projected in persuading the electorate to believe that all was Labor's fault, is now to be tipped over all of us in its full and total vileness.
No longer just a projection their foetid values will be fully manifest as they are about to swamp this land with legislation so that every vile notion of free market capitalism can be given free rein without restraint.
The Reign of the Reactionary Aspirational Bogan is here.
Gone, will be any pretence of the notion of fair play and egalitarianism.
Gone, will be universal healthcare.
Gone, will be access to education for all.
Gone, will be the effectiveness of our only public broadcaster.
These unimaginative Liarbrils have for years have been chipping away at these pillars which have made Australia a noted leader and by drawing closer to the right–wing of American “Tea-Party” politics they now see their opportunity to smash any of the remaining social contracts in preference for the “Free-Market"  insanity that in the main caused the Global Financial Crisis.
They will relentlessly bullshit the public through the right-wing, main-stream media and swamp the ABC with mendacious IPA clones (similar to the unbalanced coverage of Mandy “Il Patrone” Vanstone’s 10 minute free kick t’other night on “7.30” with Sarah “Rapportfurerin” Ferguson) and those other paragons of truth and civility, “Blot-on-the-Landscape”, Alan ”Bondi” and “London Toilet Fame” Jones and other similar shock-jock low-lives.
“We all have to do the Heavy Lifting,” says the man who has doubled the deficit by himself in six months, whilst single-handedly obliterating much of the country’s manufacturing.
“The Age of Entitlement is Over,” says the man whose party it seems is the biggest, most dishonest, slush-fund, paper-bag-wielding bunch of spivs we have ever seen whilst preparing at the same time to rip payments away from young people with disabilities…a man who thinks wind-farms are unattractive and coal mines, cool.
We are entering the abyss of a new Dark Age.
John Donne wrote,
"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were:
any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind,
and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls;
it tolls for thee."
Liberal Health HazardThe Liarbrils and their moronic IPA lickspittles have yet to get up to speed with this C17th social lesson.

It strikes me that when a Government rules for a plutocracy and not the people then its promulgations have validity only for the plutocracy and can be ignored by the people.

...to the Dance

Shane as a Wili
G'day Possums,

we recently attended and photographed a ballet performance.... so thought I'd dress up.... gives you the "willies", eh?

Suffice to say it was a very good performance and congratulations to all: performers, choreogrphers and particularly the Director of Ballet Theatre Australia, Leeanne Rutherford.

There were a selection of excerpts on the program with Giselle Act 2 as a major piece and without writing much more I'll let some of the images taken speak for themselves.

For those interested in tech details
I used a 5D, and 5D mk2, 70-200 f2.8, 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 @ 3200 and 6400 ISO.

The Premier, Baillieu (Genus: Sivertail Incompetens)  has had a bit on his plate this week.
Although handing generous bonuses to Liarbril Party supporters who just happen to be property developers is nothing new, I suppose it was a vain hope that the six new suburbs in “Green Wedge” and agricultural areas get at least sufficient developmental infrastructure to offset, to some extent, the loss of farmland. No such hope.
All are going to rely on existing public transport. Some new development is “proposed” but the track record of this government in following through on promises is bad and as they wouldn’t want to interfere in the developer’s profits, I wouldn’t be holding my breath on that proposition.

“Silvertail” irritated a few when it was discovered that, in his words, “a hiccup” caused the overcharging the public $300,000,000 on water accounts and that it had been determined that it will only be paid back when the water companies are ready.
Nothing to do with the government’s dividend of $117,000,000, is it?
Ummm, isn't that close to fraud, Ted?
Only in The Tardis State
Police Minister Peter(I-know-nuffin)Ryan, has been in the news again for all the wrong reasons. It seems that colleague, Bill Tilley secretly recorded a phone conversation with Ryan as an insurance policy because he felt that the Police Minister was “verballing” him over evidence given to the Office of Police Integrity concerning the pushing out of Police Commissioner, Simon Overland.
Ryan said “..it’s much ado over nothing.”
Yeah, right!

Federally, things are looking very interesting in the “Slippery Pete” saga….
It seems to be shaping as another Liarbril “dirty tricks” concoction a’la Godwin Grech that may turn on the accusers and “bite ‘em on the bum.”
Messers Rabbit & Whyne, to deflect some of the heat, attempted, (hypocritically) to scamper for what they thought the “high ground” of moral indignation and criticised a report that PM Gillard has set up a “dirt unit” in her office. So there!
Apparently staff  are being instructed on how to use Goggle to dig info on opposition pollies!
Given their planning ability in other areas they will probably discover the NSW “right’ of their own party in less friendly than the Liarbrils.

Gina Rinehart (the biggest, wealthiest miner in Australia) now has nearly a 20% share of Fairfax .... and is demanding three board seats.....
Imagine, she's in charge of national newspapers and Clive Palmer (another big miner) is the new Treasurer...ahhh.... democracy in action, well at least till they get the jobs.
Then, who knows?
cheers Petals

...in search of Giselle

Shane in Ballet booties.....
Hello Possums,
Once, leaving a performance of the RSC and Peter Brook’s version of “A Mid- Summer Night's Dream”  I noticed the public on the street looking quite unreal;  ill-dressed,  poorly co-ordinated.
The reality: A  450 year-old play had been more powerfully relevant and affecting in a theatre.  I remember Puck delivering his epilogue almost sotto voce, to a audience of 2500 with his legs dangling in "the pit"... there was not a sound from the 2500.
Magic.

Photographing a rehearsal of Giselle recently, similar thoughts struck me. How can a performance (ballet in particular) about young women who die before their wedding day, who come out of their graves and dance until first light, dancing to death any hapless male who crosses their path, have any semblance of veracity or relevance in a contemporary world?

Giselle rehearsal
I think  because Giselle’s  1841 creators followed Noverre’s dictum that libretto, music, choreography and staging all follow the same path. And probably more importantly, Giselle is a work of its time; a ballet which seems to encapsulate the Romantic artist’s notion of a spirit of and in nature, ethereal sentiment and otherworldly less known values that are perhaps based in a earlier animistic European culture.
Historically then the Wilis are really very frightening. They act without reason. They are a force that cannot be interacted with, only submitted to.
Giselle rehearsal
There were moments during the rehearsal watching the Wilis surrounding Hilarion when you sensed his movements were only prompted by cold vapour rushing past, unseen but inexorable and malevolent.
Giselle rehearsal, Hilarion

Or when the Wilis in arabesque cross the stage in opposite lines, it felt as if a chill mist was slowly enveloping the area; draining all warmth and life away.

Giselle rehearsal, Hilarion
It may be a “Romantic” ballet and seem “pretty-pretty” but it’s really a horror story in the realm of Frankenstein, Dracula or even Alice in Wonderland or Coleridge’s The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner and fitting musically with Berlioz’s Fantastic Symphony and the art-works of William Blake.
Giselle, in her wheeling arabesque, translating into movement a descriptive sense of being here and not here and the mental confusion of being not alive but not quite dead....

In short a bloody good watch and good art.
Wombat Droppings

Ohh Possums, where to start?

Slippery Peter’s accuser, Ashby has withdrawn most of the charges he’s laid except two of sexual harassment. Queried as to why he didn’t seek to resolve his concerns “in-house” through normal channels he said he was too afraid of Slippery Pete and the Govt.
Which presumably, is why the press and opposition sighted his allegations before his accused did.
Hmmmm ..I think I’ll start calling him Godwin. .....and Mr Whyne, on balance of evidence, a liar.

It strikes me too, that Mr.Rabbit should have been taught at some stage by his mentor Pell,  “…..that he among you who is without sin, let him cast the first stone”.

Senator Heffernan (Liarbril) has been accused of assaulting an (allegedly) bent staffer and calling him a “poofter”. Heffie was in strife a few years back with another seemingly homophobic attack on the then Chief Justice of the High Court, Michael Kirby.
Mr Rabbit doesn’t think it’s a sacking offence…just a distraction thought up by the Labor lot to protect Thomo…

Heffie must be a bit disconcerted as it seems at the moment that eligibility for the Lliarbrils might well be having to be gay….. as well as vicious.

In the State of Tardis
I don’t know what it is in the air on the Peninsular but another State Liarbril down that way is in strife. This time it’s Geoff Shaw, accused of letting his tax-payer funded parliamentary car entitlements to be used for his hardware business on interstate trips.
Member for Frankston says he might have inadvertently let someone have the keys…..duhhh… and also posted embarrassing missives to his wife …too publicly.

What is it with these Liarbrils and their constant bad taste?

“The minister in charge of the state government's so-called ''integrity agenda'' has been caught withholding information from Parliament about his own portfolios.
Documents show Liberal (sic) frontbencher Andrew McIntosh has sat on answers to questions he was meant to provide - sometimes for months after his department briefed him.
The practice appears to be common for the Corrections Minister, who is also in charge of reforms designed to improve transparency and integrity in public office, including Ted Baillieu's long-awaited anti-corruption commission freedom-of-information reforms”.
“………opposition spokeswoman Jill Hennessy accused Mr McIntosh of not meeting the transparency test when it came to his own job. ''Minister McIntosh is the government leader of the house. It is very bad form for him not to be replying to questions on notice from the Parliament. Secondly, he is the minister for public integrity yet these documents demonstrate that he has dithered and delayed on providing information,'' she said.
The documents, which Labor obtained though freedom of information, show Ms Hennessy tried to get Mr McIntosh to answer questions about Victoria's prison system. When he did not provide the answers, she lodged a freedom of information request, only to discover he had been withholding the details.

An office set up to advise the Premier on climate change policy has had its staff cut nearly in half since Ted Baillieu's election.
The climate change branch within the Department of Premier and Cabinet - responsible for dealing with Canberra over carbon pricing and overseeing the state's climate policies - has had its staff reduced from 14 before the 2010 election to eight, documents show”.     “The Age”

A recent study has found that Australia has the highest number of problem gamblers in the world and that 12% of total Govt. revenue is from gambling.
There are two gaming venues in the Western suburb of Braybrook that has a population of the most disadvantaged in Victoria but also combined revenues of $16,000,000 p.a. from the venues.

38 / 39 applications for more gaming machines are successful, despite local council opposition.

TAFE funding has been slashed to ribbons... the disadvataged will have less options for future work and as private schools are recieving more funding for 1/3 of the schoool population  ...go figure. Teaching staff will be lost, programs cut or diminished.... I did say these Liarbrils lack imagination....what they destroy in five minutes takes twenty years to re-build.   Time to re-define the BOGAN I think.

Professor Kuruvilla George, who was Victoria's deputy chief psychiatrist (former Christian missionary) a member of a doctors group known as “Doctors for the Family” made a submission to Senate inquiry declaring opposition to gay marriage stating that gays had unhealthier children than "straight" parents. He was also on the Equal Opportunity Commission  …go figure… equal what?
Deputy Premier Peter (Ronnie) Ryan (also Police Minister) said he saw no problems with George’s statements as they were only personal statements…. Really, Pete?
Police this week ordered private vehicles to be used as road blocks to stop a speeding driver on a freeway. Crash happened, many cars damaged. Fortunately no injuries to public (one man who's car was hit was in it with partner and children)… go figure what sort of mind-set had occasioned that little piece of tactical brilliance… perhaps the same sort as a Police Minister who seems not to know the difference between public office and private views.

Cheers, Petals
