Wandering the Art Trail.

Shane's gone touring

Castlemaine and the surrounding districts: Chewton, Maldon, Newstead, Taradale, Campbells Creek and Elphinstone have the highest proportion of artists per head of population of any district in Australia.

So last weekend, Mrs Wombat and I took off to Dja Dja Warrung country  to check out some of the 120 artists or 80 studios open to the public in the region's Open Studios Program and the Art trail.

It was an excellent opportunity to catch up with Ulli of Rilke Design in Castlemaine whom we haven't seen for some years, an Art School friend from decades ago who recently renewed contact and also to make a surprise visit to another art school colleague.

First stop was Newstead and David Bradtke who was showing his paintings with ceramicist Angie Izard

A talented painter and a fine potter.

Good conversation and very interesting works and a re-union which shall be maintained.

 David Bradtke, "Blue Painting"

Angie Izard, no# 5

It was then onto The Newstead Arts Hub where we met Photographer, Margund Sallowssky,

whose aerial Photos of Iceland which were so painterly as to almost defy their origins.

 Utterly stunning works.

The levity of Jane Wells' automata  was deliciously  quirky.

Hand cranking a bobbing and rotating dog's head and the flapping of the Pterodactyl's bony wings were a delight.

Small cold-cast bronzes of dogs were also very tactile and well formed

Digital images and Cyanotypes toned with lead acetate as well as bones, fur and string made up Kaye Dixon's,"Bone Women" exhibit... that darkly tended toward the morbid.

Across the tracks to the Red Shed Arts Workshop...

... and had a nice chat with Mary C about this verycompelling group exercise in painting.

Mary C discussing her contribution to the whole...

It was a terrific workshop/exhibition space.

Around the corner was Selina Wilson's studio, with beautiful acrylic paintings which I found  reminiscent of Turner and Frankenthaler.

 Lovely stuff.

John Perry's was  next ; his studio in Newstead a veritable  Aladdin's cave of art history and fascinating conversation about influences and painters.

Ron Holden in Castlemaine was the surprise.

We were at art school at the same time ... in fact I spent more time with the painters than the sculptors... they were a lot more interesting.

Ron's work is big in every sense. Bold, colourful, humourous and sensitive.

A good catch-up.

Melissa O' Rourke's delightful Blue Lady's and Italian paintings rounded out the day in Castlemaine.

It was a great day, with lots of very affable and interesting people who were very generous with their time and conversation.

Normally, in this space current politics is ranted about but not this time as it sort of sullies what was a lovely time on the art trail.

Suffice to say that anyone taking notice of what is happening in the land on the Septic Tanks and is appalled by it should realise the The Ugly American Murdoch facilitated the Orange Baboon's rise to power and is playing the same game here in Oz.

We cannot afford to be complacent about his malign influence and that of others of the same ilk

Hoo-roo, Petals.

Uncouth Behaviour as a Political Hallmark

Shane... doing a Joyce.

There was a time when bad behaviour was sanctioned and penalty's applied but not in this brave new world of the Ugly American's  Murdochracy .   More of that later.

More of my pieces from our (last years) two man show which didn't really get an airing as I only photographed them for cataloguing today.

First is "Guten Tag, Kurt." A sideways glance at the work of Kurt Schwitters.

 12mm ply 90 H x 42 W x w30 D. w/ 2mm steel mesh
  Faux rusted steel patina.

Guten Tag, Kurt.

No-one seemed to like this piece but I like its affinity to the Bauhaus of the late 20's and early 30's and also the Russian Constructivists of the 20's... it also  seems to reference Anthony Caro's horizontal sculptural developments in the 60's.

"Swing" is an old piece being repeated atm. Originally made from Privet Hedge, a wood which is quite  hard and a strong material ... in its original form it was sold and now (if it survived the journey), resides in the Mid West of America.      The next iteration will be in Manna Gum.   30 x 30 x 25.
Next from the show was "Paul", a portrait of the fellow who successfully exhibited with me...

Based upon an beautiful expressionistic C15th sculpture by Nicholas Gerheart Leyden, this piece  more accurately reflects the quiet contemplative nature of the sitter . Cast resin, faux bronze patina, 35H x 30 W  x 30.

"Maggie" has appeared on this blog before but there may be news about this piece in a month or two.

Uncouth Behaviour as a Political Hallmark

"Drone" Dutton, can he ever tell the truth or is he just  more obviously evil than the thing he replaced?
"Barnyard" Joyce, is he just an alchoholic sponge or a Canberra tourist attraction?
"The Harpy", Cash, why does she seem wholly demented and are the Sulphur Crested Cockies really complaining about image theft?
"An_us" Taylor who allegedly forges letters and who congratulates himself on Farcebook is really a  "leader"...but of what ?
"Handy Andy", Hastie  seems more akin to the Waffen SS... and just why did that nick-name stick after his "tour" in Afghanistan?
"Pansy" Paterson,  an IPA "intellectual" (that's a joke folks), who would look genuinely appropriate in a Hitler Youth cossie, sans face-fluff, of course, who takes himself so seriously that everyone can only laugh.

This is a brief look at what is supposed to be an alternative government, the leftovers from nine years on corruption, mismanagement, policy inertia and bad faith.

One  positive note is , "The Bullying-Liar-from-the-Shire" and" multiple-minister," he who stated, "I don't hold a hose, mate", "Scummo of Advertising" who was the  "Front" of the last disaster to befall the country is departing our shores.
Australia's gain will be the Yankee's loss. But will he have to return to  face ICAC?

But all this dross is constantly feted by our media. Why?

Because of the Ugly American, Murdoch's  infiltration of the ABC and a 75% control of all media in this country.
He and his minions are frightened that their sway on what has been a supine public is fading; that the rhetoric of fear, catastrophe and frankly, bullshit is more and more being seen for what it is, just bullshit!

The "News" we have pushed at us is not news at all, it is a collection of data to serve the purpose of billionaires and their business interests.
Does Murdoch have interests in Gaza ...through the Israeli's?
Does "Our Biggest Miner" Rinehart live in Indonesia?
Does "Twiggy" really have the interests of the indigenous at heart?

Oz  petals, needs to grow up...

Hoo-roo,
Shane.

Exhibiting Taste of a Peculiar Type

Portrait of the Artist...

G'day you three,

Now, although the title may seem to reference the first section of today's rant it does so only obliquely and really is addressing some recent political machinations. I suppose the key link to the title in both sections is appropriateness.

Shane's been showing off again and unusually for him, with a painting as well as a photograph and a sculpture. All of the works are titled "I do Like to be Besides the Seaside...:" Nos 1, 2, and 3

The title was originally suggested to the arts space when exhibition ideas had been sought and the offering was returned as, "A Day at the Beach"  (?)  with the admonition that their version would allow more imaginative responses.
To me it's banal, prosaic and  dully unimaginative.

No 1, Elwood

Photographed early one morning way, way back

No 3, Point Impossible, Torquay

A re-worked older piece that came up pretty well and may deserve a new mold as the original was in pretty poor nick and has been binned.

No-one asked. well, one knew,  but there is a connecting theme to the titles but again there has been no response.

"Elwood" is a gentle work, very peaceful and subdued and although I like  Rita Wingard's "Crashing Waves" and Lili Eggleston's "Ebb and Flow in the Shallows" expressionistic verve on either side of it,  they  absolutely swamp it... appropriate hanging, a definite NO!

Appropriate photograph to detail artworks ? Not really but done only  to illustrate a point. This sort of oblique sidelong view is seen all too often online for galleries of various sorts particularly when there is glass involved in a painting or drawing. It really sends  multiple of wrong messages. So on that point, I present a couple of nice things ... without glass.

Leann Brown, Four Rock pool themes  very attractive Acrylic Resin and wood pieces.

And finishing with a whimsical bit of fun,

Tin Denton's  "In at the Deep End,"
Mixed media.

A peculiar taste...

After all the cynical bleating over the stage 3 tax cuts but with most of the public supporting Labor's changes, the ex Ruling Rabble-Hellsong-IPA cabal have been forced to change focus and are now reading from the Prue McSween nasty-cask by berating not only the PM but his new fiancée for having the temerity to announce their intended marriage.
Jeering Jennett another Ruling Rabble toy-boy on the emasculated ABC asked another Ruling Rabble non-entity , F*****t, Fletcher "..whether he thought Albo's marriage was going to distract him from his prime ministership?" I mean, really ?... Is this is the rank level of your journalism?
It's not only the leftover's stale-male  rabble but the women also who are constantly vile of speech and thought but are supported by so-called journalists like Annabel Crabbe who obviously spends far too much time in Hissy-Fits Sale's orbit, who penned a piece insulting the fiancée by listing her "achievements" and then being negative about Albanese's previous marriage. It was putrid stuff from what was, once a fine writer and commentator. And another, Maley of the SMH headlines her column with, "Albo's "recruited" a wife! " These scribes are a disgrace!
But then all these right-wing trolls have to deflect from the scandal of Potato-Head's quite probably, criminal mismanagement of asylum seeker monies which has been judicially reported on but which all of the media are studiously avoiding.  The Specious One Speers on what is now a Ruling Rabble love-fest with a failing "Insiders" ( more than halved the audience so far in his tenure) spent 18 minutes detailing Labor's supposed failure because 18 boat people arrived in WA but a trifle over one minute on Potato-Head's fiscal perfidy. One!

So too with Barnyard Joyce's latest inanity. All the excuses in the world are flying from the mouths, pens and other orifices of scribes supporting Barnyard who was filmed on the ground ranting into his phone after falling off a planter box in Canberra's main drag late at night. Drunk as a Skunk , Pissed as a Fart, absolutely hammered... but not out for the count in their books ... he could still be deputy PM one day.
As Phillip Adams cutely commented, "He was always noted as a good retail politician ... I just didn't know it was for Dan Murphy's!" And the current deputy leader of the Nats? She was forced to admit after some wayward thought and speech at a parliamentary enquiry that she'd imbibed a couple of glasses of wine before the meeting.
That our opposition decision makers are moral and ethical vacuums seems of no concern to The Ugly American's  media minions but it's ok to attack the PM's engagement?
It's hard to fathom, beyond the politics of envy, to make everything a ploy to make all  about a good government seem bad. Play everything as a negative and mis-report facts, carry stories slanted a particular way, use selective language and generally lambaste good work.
It certainly is beyond time that a Royal Commission in to the whole media is long overdue!

Hoo-roo Possums,
Shane

Shane with new sculpture

It's been a long time between drinks.

The last post (pun intended), was the day following Albo's Labor, the Greens and "Teal" Independents  rout in comprehensively eliminating the vile Scummo and his Ruling Rabble-Hellsong-IPA cabal from further rorting the taxpayer, lowering standards of behaviour and making a mockery of parliament.

Much, on that front, has happened since and I will detail some of the events later in the blog.

I've started making sculpture again and have been exhibiting on a regular basis at a newish local viewing space.
I suppose the impetus came from a real need to create things again and to let loose with a range of materials not just figurative pieces as had been the pasts main oeuvre. It is proving very satisfying and there is something rather delicious in the work to resolve the "struggle" between "the idea" and the material, particularly as I seem a lot freer to "just have a crack" and see what eventuates.

The piece above, "G'day Clem", was influenced from looking at Tatlin,  Schwitters and an early Clem Meadmore, hence the title. I had some 12mm Ply left over from other work and limited myself to just what was there and I think it concluded that constraint quite well.
Plywood with rust-paint patina 500mm high.

Steel

"Steel" were some water-tank stand supports that had been kicking around for years so I decided to put them together and keep them in one place.

Rusted steel on a plywood, rust-paint patinated base, 450mm wide, 300 high high.
Mrs. Wombat calls it The Arachnid Hotel.

Becoming more creatively active led to joining with a fellow artist and friend, painter, Paul Anthony and having a joint exhibition.

Planning started with building a scale model of the space and both of us scaling our respective works in what later became a successful exercise in placing our pieces in the areas allotted.
There were both old and new works: Paul with oils on canvas, and I slipped in some ballet photos and drawings to compliment the sculptures which were both
figurative and non- figurative.

Lawrence Winder... aka Shane Wombat.

Much was learned, and we were happy with the positive comments about the works and how professional the space looked.

We both sold well; Paul eight, me six which allowed me to finance a new "you-beaut" bench saw and for the first time in many years, re-organize the studio as a more efficient work space.

More later

Paul Anthony

The State of the Nation

Scummo, The Bullying Liar-From-the-Shire has finally decided to leave parliament and "work" for the Yanks. Given his history one can only surmise that he'll either be sacked or jailed by them in about 18 months.
This evil man's appointment of Ita "Tabloid Gel," Buttrose to head-up and dismember the ABC has proven remarkably effective as that once iconic broadcaster is now mostly just tabloid pap.
With many senior journalists either being sacked or resigning and management kow-tow-ing to whoever makes a complaint it's barely a shadow of what it once was.

I forced myself to view "Insiders" last Sunday morning for the first time in 2 1/2 years and as I've said elsewhere, it was just a vapid pastiche of a once informative and entertaining political discussion.  The host, "The Specious One," Speers who decided to move it to Sydney has created a flat, dull, featureless wasteland of far-right obviousness where bitchy comment and triviality pretends to be reasoned debate.

ABC has, since the defeat The Ruling-Rabble-Hellsong-IPA cabal  promoted them as if they're the government and Labor government ministers regularly have their pressers truncated.
Many of the broadcasters hosts are now completely open in their bias against the Labor which means that apart from two smallish readerships of "The Guardian"  and "The Saturday Paper" all press and media in this country is now right-wing... and mostly feral right-wing at that!

The relentless negativity toward what is a very good government will eventually have its impact at the ballot box as we saw in the defeat of the referendum... and a return to the vile, self-serving, criminality of the gross dross we suffered for nine years in quite on the cards.
The referendum result showed how alarmingly naive, selfish and unthinking this population is.
It doesn't auger well for the future.

Labor needs to kick some heads... and fast!

Hoo-roo, petals,

Shane.

The Awakening

Fascism at bay.
A friend rang on election night and advised not to get too excited. Well, at that early stage The Ruling Rabble-Hellsong-IPA cabal had five seats to Labor's none and I was more concerned the polls were again wrong and a country on the very edge of the abyss was about to fall into a death spiral of a confected neo-liberal, capitalist, Pentecostal theocracy.

An inexorable climb then began in Labor's vote with the Greens and "Teal" Indies also demonstrating that Ruling Rabble bloodletting was the night's sport... and a smiling Anthony Green's, "I can definitely tell you that Craig Kelly will not be the next PM of Australia.", followed by a dour Liberal staffer's, "The wheel's still turning but the Hamster's dead." being the best quips of the night's rout.

Waking and feeling more relaxed than usual on May 22nd, as I was dressing an image manifested: of looking backward down a long, featurelessly grey, smoggy tunnel, a dully dead, lifeless place of no clarity or future. I realised that the end, or rather, the beginning of that tunnel was 2013 and that a real psychic burden had been lifted the previous night.

London Underground 2015

Seeking to enhance this levity of mood by indulging in a little schadenfreude I decided for once to watch "Insiders." Samantha Maiden's sour, bitterly negative anti-labor mien was on predictable display but it was almost like an "Insiders" of old, with the Liberal Loving apparatchik The Specious One, Speers interrupting less frequently than usual and where discursive analysis took place between Crowe and Murphy instead of the usual recitation of PMO talking points... was it just me or was the mood of that program really lighter and more informative?

Seems not an aberration, as conversations during subsequent days and online comments bore witness to a general lift in people's spirits, ".. people are smiling at each other in the street", "... feel a great weight has been lifted..." "... we know there's a future..."

..but and there's always a but!

The Murdochracy and its ABC fellow travellers like Poesy Probyn, Frantic Kelly, Little Janey Norman, Dickie Willingham, Jeering Jennett, Hissy-Fits Sales and of course The Specious One, Speers have all retreated to their parallel universes, bleating their angst at having three solid years of mis-information and biased reporting count for little that was taken notice of and that their collective egos are bruised for not being seen as the "real" players in this political drama but just second or third rate scribes and commentators of little account.

How could Labor form a legitimate government with only 34% of the vote?

Poesy Probyn: " Albo isn't appealing to the smart end of the street. He is appealing to the people who clean the street"

 "Morrison will be fondly remembered"

"Gone from a candidate to a world leader on 1/3 of the vote"

" a colourful parliament." (referring to its diversity...)

This Petals, dog help us, is supposed to be the taxpayer funded, Chief Political Reporter for the National Broadcaster!

And on election night Hissy-Fits Sales badgering Tanya Plibersek with "What went wrong with Labor...?"

"Aahh, we won!" replied, TP.

Annabel Crabb's spitting unseemly venom in the direction of Holmes aCourt about "... billionaires throwing their money around.." because he assisted with the independents.

Having every news program taken up with Liberal hand-wringing, self justification  and virtual advertising is showing us that the ABC can no longer be assured of the population's trust as an impartial and unbiased reporter and not only needs investigation but that heads should roll from the board through the MD and heads of programming.

Let's not end on the farcical issuing's from the rump of the Ruling Rabble Hellsong-IPA cabal on how wrong / uninformed / blind the electorate is but concentrate instead on how to make a better community now that there is a chance at equality and fairness, and also look forward to the ultimate pleasures of a federal ICAC, where I doubt there is not one of the Rabble who will not be implicated and some possibly jailed for their abuse of public funds.... after their nine years of what...? Just divisiveness and rorting.

Hoo-roo Petals,

Shane

The Business of Killing Australia.

G'day fellow victims, How the hell did we get here?....Easy. Federally, a total lack of leadership: corruption from the highest to the lowest levels: sheer incompetence and: a supportive, biased and compliantly Murdochratized and corrupted media. Sounds Trumpian?... you bet!
So the Goya etchings from his Los Caprichos are more than suitable illustrations for our time and more of Shane's colourful transport later.

Scummo the Liar from Marketing Announcements is still regaling us with his curry photos and now has joined TikTok to distract and groom gullible youth' attempting to influence their vote....he's forgotten calling said platform a Chinese propaganda unit but then he lies so often, even he can't keep up.  Grace Tame nailed him so early in her progress that Scummo-the-Liar decided that the Australian of the Year award had to be more politically controlled' which I think spurred her on to make the best use of her time in the role. A part of which was supporting ex-Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins in her quest for justice in pursuing rape charges against another Liberal staffer... no , not the one who masturbated on a female ministers desk... no, not the one inviting prostitutes into parliament... no, not the ones having sex in the parliamentary prayer room (boys will be boys wont they darls...), but the one allegedly with, shall we say, a "reputation" for drink spiking prior to carnal activities? Yes, that one. Scummo the Liar's backgrounding against Higgins probably brought a wry smile to Michael Towke's face; and the Liberal women who attended the Higgen's &Tame's rather large rally for women at parliament house looked quite uncomfortable, understanding for once that they were, generally, not amongst their normal milieu of Pru's & Tru's.

Aided and abetted by the Mudochracy, a "turned" ABC and promoting Scummo the Liar's politicking over covid that "Labor premiers bad, Liberal premiers good" the tin-foil hatted, anti-vax , fascists literally hit the streets, particularly in Melbourne where Dan-the Man had stopped Covid but was being hounded as Dictator Dan for his success. Sydney's, St Gladys of Binchicken (Saviour of the Nation according to Clueless Coorey of the fin revue) soon reversed that as she did in every other state successfully tackling the virus, by sending forth tainted emissaries to join her crusade of "living-with-the-virus-your-lives-are-not-as-important-as-the-economy-peasant." Those who died and will die in the future from Covid can depart this life satisfied that they are part of Scummo's "gold standard."
Unfortunately St Gladys did a bunk when NSW ICAC told her they were investigating her and her dealings with a certain feckless chap, McGuire who was selling visa's to would-be citizens when Scummo was immigration Minister... so it's no wonder he thought ICAC a Kangaroo court of monumental proportions and railed and railed and railed about the unfairness of it all.
Michael Towke, no doubt, smiling still!
Anyhow, St Gladys of Binchicken will keep all her parliamentary goodies even if she's found against... as she has left the room.
Omicron Dom, a religiously unfunny terrorist has taken her place and taking the reins very loosely in NSW has proceeded to make sure we all live-with-the-virus, at least until we're dead.

Business isn't really booming like they said it would ....to many have the virus, too many aren't going to unsafe work places for peanut-pay, too many are really pissed off that business' who received huge handouts when not entitled and are now being told to fork out inflated prices for an Australian designed Rapid-Antigen-Test that Scummo the Liar pissed off to be manufactured overseas.
Too many are now aware that the IPA / Hellsong model of running an economy precludes fairness and equity...the natives are restless.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moo got her car.... aluminium body, chassis frame steel, lights, brakes, leather seat.... genuine BMC colour from the 70's (I had one just this colour)... happy to say it went down a treat.
Next projects... a Thames Steam Boat, a Fokker DXX1 and a new group of pics for a children's book.... and a secret (for the time being) project for someone else....all to help staying sane inside whilst the Ruling Rabble-Hellsong-IPA cabal trash the country even further....that the place is falling apart around us is all too visible.

Hoo-roo Possums, stay strong and keep left!

A Nation of Disease

Shane up a Gum Tree

 G'day Possums,

Mrs Wombat and I have been travelling, (lucky us).. we managed to escape another lockdown and visit No#1 daughter, husband and grands in Alice for a week.

We also took a few days further south and stumbled around Uluru and Kata Tjuta which are magnificent in scale, colour and indigenous significance.

Not only did we escape lockdown but mercifully any mention of the nation's historically most incompetent, corrupt and useless PM, Scovid from Announcements.

But prior to our adventure Premier Dan Andrews or as the Neo-Fascists label him, Dictator Dan was being roundly pilloried for calling the state into lockdown #4 as a chap had crosssed into Vic from SA hotel quarantine and had tested positive for the Delta Strain of the virus and Andrews wanted it contained maintaining it was much more contagious than the original version. ABC's "Hissy-Fits" Sales and "The Specious One" Speers all joined in the cat-calling emanating from the Murdochracy and citing Scovid from Announcements' assertion that the Gold Standard of Sydney's a'la Gladdie Binchicken was the way to go and that Dan was paranoid.

Uluru

Unfortunately for the Murdocratic naysayers Andrews and team were on-the-money and they halted it reasonably quickly  but a few weeks later a couple of infectious removalists from Gladdie Binchicken's "Gold Standard" state sprinkled their Delta malaise throughout Vic and into regional areas for the first time causing lockdown#5.
But this time the Murdochracy were in a quandry: Gladdie Binchicken's "Gold Standard' was looking a trifle Pyrites-like as the number of infections in NSW increased and looked like Uluru with more below sight than in it.
And of course Scovid from Announcements did what he does best in a crisis: Dodo-like, he disappeared ....this time to have hair plugs attached to his vacant skull in a vain attempt to improve his sagging image.

Uluru, early morning
Upon return, Scovid from Announcements for the first time began extolling the efficacy of hard lockdown and lying through his teeth that he had always supported Dan Andrews approach and that we should all get vaccinated as quickly as possible... only  forgetting that he hadn't ordered enough vaccines in the first place and that his vacillating on who should get the AZ and who the Pfizer was causing more confusion and hesitancy!

Kata Tjuta, gorge
The immensity of the task has clearly overwhelmed Scovid from Announcements and his Hellsong-IPA cabal. Good only for announcements, spin and rorting public money, more and more of the public are now fully and clearly aware that this Ruling Rabble is  there only for the power it gives them and not for the well-being of the nation. Their miserable failure in every single aspect of governance will cost the nation dearly many years into the future.

"Freedom-Day" rallies have broken out at
Kata Tjuta, gorge

times various with anti-vaxxers joining the 5G implant, tin-foil hat, flat-earther, Libertarian brigades all extolling their individuality and willingness to harm others as they want.

The dicta of me, me, me, me of Little Johnny's relaxed and comfortable Liberals of insouciant selfishness now bearing its malignant fruit as exemplified by the quartet of 60 something "Pru's and Tru's" on the flight back to Melbourne who had repeatedly  to be told by cabin crew to keep their masks on... whilst I was reading an aptly telling passage from Bruce Pascoe's "Salt" of "...a nation without modesty, without compassion, a spoilt and selfish people forever chortling about goodness and mateship." and " Where there is sand, there is little rock."
It is a Nation of Disease without a doctor.

White-Fella's Sand Painting

And so it goes.... beautiful, beautiful country...accomodation...ok... food.. terrible to ordinary and very very expensive ...service...good... but the country... early morning seems to bring out the subtlety of colour and those sentinals of She-Oak being so, so still, waiting, whispering, being.

And of course, not to forget the Alice Springs Asian Ladies Sunday Morning Crochet Class .....much fun and tinkling mirth being had.....

Hoo-roo petals,
Shane.
